Default Can u guys help me?

well i have been in the market for a new game to satisfy my thirst, after being a hard core FPS gamer i feel like a change and am considering buying Guild Wars.

The query i have is this....

I read that you make PvP only characters that are raised straight away to level 20, but can you make characters that allow you to build up your own skills from level 1? like in Diablo II, then just go roaming around open country killing monsters or other online players with a group of friends. Tell me if im getting the completely wrong idea of what this game is about, im sure i sound like a n00b to your guys...

Of course! If not, why would they even put the idea of levels in? lvl 20 is the maximum lvl though, so if you'd rather be busy lvl'ing and getting great items as in Diablo II, this is not really your game. This game might be an RPG, but there are not many RPG aspects that take you ages to get. Perfect items and lvl 20 are achieved in a short period, and you won't be busy getting your character "perfect" that long.

You can make PvE characters that start at level one, play through the storyline or just go exploring on your own (though playing the storyline and doing the missions/quests is a better way to learn new skills).

At the start (pre-searing) you can only team up with one other player, but in post-searing you can form teams of four, then six and finally eight other players (or hired NPC henchmen). You cannot kill other online players in PvE mode, as everytime you leave a city you (and your party) are in your own "instance".

Hope that helps.

Well, it won't take long to get the best items that's the best for your build, so no, items don't matter. People PvP alot after finishing PvE. And there are some places that are fun to go to alot. There are also very expensive armors, but those aren't better then the cheap ones, they just look "special" (uglier in my opinion...).

ah, see here is where the game departs from most others.

the actual campaign play is very similar to diablo, but the character generation is not.

warrior
ranger
elementalist (wizard)
mesmer (type of spellcaster)
necromancer (death magic)
monk (cleric/healer)

these are the character classes.
each character must choose 2 of these --- a primary and a secondary, w/the order mattering.
so, you can see that already you've got a lot of variation between characters.
now, pretty much the whole game revolves around the skills/spells that you choose to run with.
you will discover new ones as you travel along, and you can carry 8 at a time.
the only time you can change them for others in your library is when you are in town.
check 'em out:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/skill.php

now, you should see that there are pretty much endless combinations for people to pit against the iway team they are fighting.

edit:

I don't play pvp, so I might stand corrected on some of this, but the relationship between campaign and pvp is a bit intertwined.
as you travel through the campaign (pve) you will discover ('unlock') new skills and weapons.
if you choose to play a pvp (lvl 20) character (you can have a stable of four characters), those skills and weapons that you 'unlocked' in pve are what will be available to you.
I think there's also some way to buy them in pvp, but I have no idea what it is.
also, as you travel around, you will come across a few arenas in the pve campaign where you can just jump in and play pvp for a few matches.

You can play pve and unlock all the skills through that or you can unlock all the skills in the game through pvp alone. So, if you absolutely hate pve and only bought it for pvp that is ok too. The points you buy skills with are called Faction. It is 1000 faction for a normal skill and 3000 faction for an elite skill. You can only carry 1 elite skill out of 8 on your bar at any time and they are usually elite because they are more powerful than your average skill. You can also buy weapon upgrades and runes which I think run about 1000-3000 faction each. Weapon upgrades improve your weapons (all weapons made on pvp characters have max stats and perfect inherent mods) you can add 2 weapon upgrades to a weapon. Runes improve attributes and are place on armor (you can have 1 rune per armor piece). The more the rune improves your attributs the more penalty it takes on your health. Minor is +1 to the said attribute and no hp penalty. Major is +2 to the said attribute with -50hp penalty and Superior is +3 to the said attribute with -75hp penalty.

dont lissen to those hipocrats , it will take a long time to unlock all skills with your rpg char ... dont make a pvp char when you get the game. play thru the game , as slow as you can .. there will be a time where you can change your second profession , then you can unlock all skills for all professions with that char , only then you can consider your selfe done with pve for that char imo.

im playing for 7 months and becose i didnt focus just on skills before , i was farming , buying 15k armors , even got a guildhall .. i have about half of skills.

there are 450 - 600 ??? skills , im not sure anymore on this number

Yeah I'd definitely recommend playing PvE but do keep one character slot (as of now you get only 4) available for PvP. I made a mistake of making 4 PvE characters thinking that PvP character wouldn't make up a slot. Duh me.

Anyway PvE is how you acquire skills and items which you can 'unlock' for PvP. If PvP isn't your thing - that's fine since it's entirely optional.

For me the fun is in the skills part of the game. There's no levelling grind to deal with so you basically can jump in right away (nearly ha) and you get to experiment with various ways of using skills available to you.

For instance with a ranger, you can easily go:
1. trapper (laying traps to ambush your enemies and soften them up for the rest of your team to slaughter),
2. beastmaster (in which you control a pet you have to capture - he or she can become your tank or your damage dealer or whatever),
3. anti-spellcaster (you have access to skills that can interput your enemy spellcaster casting ability which basically can shut them down rending them useless to their team),
4. conditon-dealer (you can inflict various conditions upon your enemies such as poisoning them, causing them to bleed uncontrollablely, cripple them so they cannot flee that well, and so on)
5. group damage dealer (you can set your build up so you can inflict damage across a group of enemies if they're clustered)
6. individual damage dealer (self explanatory)

And that's just with ranger primary. Throw in a secondary profession and possiblities go up. With new classes coming with the chapter 2, the possible class combinations (and each class combination have several possible builds within them) will go even more high.
